Our Activities
Education
A key focus in all of our programs across geographical regions is on Education. We recognize that in India, the only way out of poverty, marginalized and disadvantaged contexts is through education. It is the strong foundation, on which children in our homes, night care shelters, daycare programs can build a new life both for themselves & their families. It is critically important in helping them rewrite their narrative. We want the next generation to have the means to break free from the vicious cycle of exploitation & entrapment.
Computer Labs
Education in the 21st Century is incomplete without the knowledge of computers. All of the children in our aftercare homes are enrolled in schools in their respective regions that offer Computer Education or have access in the community programs to both online education (necessitated because of the pandemic) & learning basics of computers.
NIOS
For rescued adolescents or adults who till they have come into our care have had no access to basic schooling, we provide bridge courses that help them enrol in the NIOS program. In our aftercare homes, extrapolated also to other regions, an intense trauma-sensitive curriculum is designed in a multilingual and multi-structured program, irrespective of age to integrate them into a regular stream of learning. Data from 12 years of intentional observations have helped us tweak the curriculum at regular interventions to enhance its efficacy. Simultaneously, adolescents are given opportunities that hone aptitude, develop soft skills which increase self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses to choose a vocation most suited to them. Career guidance and exposure to various fields of work are given to each individual in our program. We strive to prepare students for the world of opportunities that lies ahead. “hum Kissi se kum nahi” (We are not lesser than others/peers) is a motto that helps them rise above the stigma and pain of the past.
The residential program provides a safe haven to rescued women, adolescents and children from red-light districts. They are provided with a holistic environment in which their physical and emotional needs are met in a trauma-informed and enriched environment. Education, life skills and counselling are major components of the programs.
After Care Homes
Vocational &
Skills Development Centres
Women in the red-light districts are provided with opportunities for alternate income generation. Women and adolescent girls who attend the training centres have the opportunity to learn tailoring, jewellery making, screen printing, make-up artistry, organic farming to set up in-house nursery, animal husbandry – production of various dairy products along with the training to produce and pack unadulterated spices, pickles and jams.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND VOCATIONAL SKILLS TRAINING
These care centres are operational in the evenings and provide nutritious food, help with studies, and a safe, emotionally secure & caring environment that helps ensure adequate and undisturbed sleep. This in addition to keeping them physically and emotionally healthy also allows them to stay in school, since they now have a place to ensure adequate study.
Counselling services are provided for those children /adolescents who have learning or adjustment issues in school. The environment seeks to instil self-worth, hope and a zest for life. Here, children simply have fun, learn, play, be safe and in short, be children!
After School Program & Night Care Shelters
HIV/AIDS &
Medical Clinics
We have established clinics in the red-light districts, to increase ease of access of the women and children to reliable health care services. Here a doctor, nurse, and social worker work together to attend to regular health complaints, including a wide range of health concerns from skin infections, digestive problems checking of blood sugar levels, and Pressure to ensure adequate information, understanding and compliance with the ART treatment plan. The team also networks effectively with hospitals & clinics in nearby areas to promote reliable care to mothers and babies, both antenatal and post-natal care.
ONLINE EDUCATION DURING COVID TIMES
Awareness Programs provide free education about sex slavery and trafficking, HIV /AIDS and the value of girls in schools and communities. Training and equipping staff of NGOs, Volunteers and Community workers helps in increasing the quality and standard of response to the need.
Awareness programs are conducted across cities in schools, colleges, professional colleges, the police, auto drivers, at railway stations, bus conductors & in organizations that are at risk, at unwittingly perpetuating commercial sex trafficking. A significant part of the awareness building is helping the public recognize when a girl may be at risk of being trafficked, just by observing her behaviour or the behaviour of the one accompanying her.
COVID RELIEF- A vital program launched in every region where we have a presence has been the provision of essentials to women and children in the Red-Light Areas.
While the pandemic left global economies reeling, with millions left without adequate means of livelihood, the women in the Red-Light Areas had no recourse. Recognizing the need to respond immediately, teams in each of our 4 Regions of Delhi, Pune & Jaipur & Bangalore moved quickly to arrange for ways to put together monthly ration kits of food items for women and the children in their families. They worked with the local police to grant permits for the movement during the lock downtimes, to ensure prompt & orderly distribution of the essential grocery items.
In each of our centres, in the early days of the pandemic, face masks were made, and distributed in the Red-Light area, police and primary municipal workers as our part in preventing the spread of Covid.
It has been our experience that the police and local authorities worked enthusiastically to support us in the multiple distribution drives done in each region.
